Carolina bandsaw
I have a Carolina Tool bandsaw model HD-10. Apparently the company is out of business. I am in need of the cutoff switch. The instructionns do not say anything about the use of cutting fluid. Does anyone else have one of these saws.

Probably thousands of those junk saws out there. The Travelers Rest, SC tool gypsies were quite prolific at one time.

I have a version of that saw, but it is a Ramco and I don't know how or who aqcuired who, but the carolinas are very very similar design to the ramcos and I am dealing with a similar issue.
yes you can adapt the saw for coolant as I am. Use oil though so it doubles as a lubricant to the saw.
Search MMC for p/n: 7783K15 this switch should be similar to what you need. You will be able to go from there.
If you are in a bind, you can hard wire the switch and use the saw plug to turn saw off and on. This is VERY unsafe by many perspectives, but if you are competent and keep your hands out of the saw under all circumstances it can serve as a short term fix to maintain production. - Hot Rolled

I think those guys are still in business at
www.carolinaequipment.com
(800) 933-5705
They sell a retrofit coolant system. Mine came with worn out bushings and I had to rework it for roller type bearings to get it to work right. I think the worst Chicom saw is probably as good or better than one of these. - Mickey_DStainless

On the subject of Carolina/Ramco tools, also watch out for Titan Industrial. It is the same guys and they always have some story about they opened it for a tool show and now they can't send it back. They are big on Craigslist as well as making the rounds of small shops. Reminds me a lot of the guys selling out of date meat out of the white freezers tied in the back of pickup trucks.

Those companies in Travelers Rest, South Carolina were/are owned by the Hawkins family. Much of the 'gypsie' selling was done by some of the infamous 'Irish Travelers' families (or I think so) who have a large residence just north of Aiken, South Carolina. I seem to recall that the original business in Travelers Rest (35 years ago) was called Arrow Tools.Originally Posted by MilacronProbably thousands of those junk saws out there. It has been alleged that the Irish Travelers are responsible for much of the con work on roof and siding repair all up and down the USA east coast. Many of them drive identical styled pick-up trucks, according to a 60-minute episode I saw 20 years or so ago.
I remember seeing a South Carolina pick-up truck parked in a motel I was staying in near Houston in 1997. In the back of the pick-up was a load of the so called tools from Travelers Rest. The truck looked like an Irish Travelers style truck to me.
It is interesting to drive through the Irish Travelers residential area in South Carolina. The houses are very gaudy styled and mostly are made of white or some other light colored brick and are several stories high. The families are primarily Catholic and there will usually be a statue of the mother of Jesus in the yard. You have no doubt you have arrived in the area when you see the houses.

I have one of the Ramco bandsaws, got it and a new case of Lennox premium bi-metal blades at an auction for 140 bucks. All I can say is bob is correct that a cheasy chicom saw is far better than anything Carolina or Ramco. There is nothing rigid or straight on the darn thing and the bed and stand are so light weight that until I put a frame and wheels under it you had to be darn careful about raising the saw up as the whole thing would flip over backwards. I had planned on using some 3/4' plate and welding up a new bed to replace the sheet metal one on the saw but I am thinking when the case of blades is used up the saw will go under the torch and to the scrapper. Life is too short to mess with garbage like that saw.

I parted out a 'Carolina' saw (I should put the SAW in quotation marks). TOTAL POS even with good blades. The Travelers always drive new pickup trucks. I had one show up at my place in a truck painted up to look like a D.O.T. vehicle, wanting to give me a deal on some asphalt left over from a nearby paving job.
I said no thanks but sent him to see my neighbor (the Sheriff) - Aluminum

Jockofthelowveld, I noticed your location as Blythewood S.C. ,
My FIL lives on HWY 21 in Blythewood

Toolchaser;
Yes, I have but I did not know what was going on. I went over to Edgefield County a couple of years ago to purchase a tractor and I came through 'Murphy Village' where the Travelers live and I saw a new house empty and could not understand why. Now I know. I read on the web where there are 1,500 Irish Travelers living there with only 11 family names.

I guess it makes it harder for the law to track down someone when there are 30 or so guys with the same name..

This is interesting. I've seen the Traveler's Rest address on my Carolina saw nameplate but until now I never heard of these Irish Traveler characters. Now that I know some of the history and heritage behind it, I like my saw better now..

Now that I know some of the history and heritage behind it, I like my saw better now..I'll prolly still just quietly kick mine when I pass by it..
NAW..
I don't use it anymore, but 25 years ago when it was the only saw I had, I tweaked it around, added coolant & a chain drive in place of the V belt on the blade wheel, and cut several hundred 2.5 inch 304 slugs as well as several hundred 3-3/4' 718 inconel slugs with that ole bitch...and it got the job DONE in pretty fair fashion

I thought I stole one of those from a garage sale for $50. 5 years later I was very happy to get the $50 back I spent on it. What a POS.

Saw
After reading all the messages about the Carolina bandsaw I suppose that I will just have to find out for myself how good or bad it really is. I will be sure to post my findings here. I tried it out and it cuts true and so far I can not find any faults with it. It appears sturdy and I hope that it works as good as I believe it should. Like any piece of equipment it can always be improved upon.

Might seem that way, but Traveler's Rest isn't associated with the 'travelers' in any way except for the fact that they'd come to the various Hawkins' places to load up. IIRC, Traveler's Rest was a stage stop in the 1800's.Originally Posted by LanganobobThis is interesting. No one I've ever known of has any use for that band of roaming thieves who call themselves the travelers. Another of their favorite scams is to stop at a shop claiming they're there to buy scrap. One will occupy the owner while a couple more scout the place for a later midnight visit, or pick up anything that happens to be loose.
A friend of mine put about 8 9mm slugs from a Browning Hi Power thru one of their shiny new dually thiefmobiles when they didn't leave his place fast enough to suit him, then stuck it in the leader's face and assured him he had more than enough rounds left to finish him and his buddies too. Around these parts, those characters aren't about to call the law. Only way the law would've arrested my friend is because he didn't shoot all 3 of them when he finished with their truck - Aluminum

I have this same saw, and have had it for about 15 years. I bought it at auction without seeing it, and will admit if I had I would not have bought it. I will also admit I trued the cast wheels on my lathe and welded on a larger outfeed table.
With that said, and as cheesy as it is, it has cut everything I have ran through it without problem for over 15 years.

Sure glad i found this thread. Was thinking this relatively close auction was going to be a steal on an upgrade for home but then i read this thread and not a single positive thing said about these band saws. One not-so-negative thing was said but still calling it cheesy and implying he's surprised it's done what it has doesnt make me feel too good about buying one.
Even for less then $100 i dont think it's worth it.

They are a bandsaw shaped object. My FIL has one of the small HF bandsaws in his hobby shop. I have used it while helping him out and for what it is it's not bad at all. It is way better than any of the Ramco/Carolina garbage. For me, the Caroline/Ramco problem is that they LOOK like a real saw, but they are not at all.
My primary saw is actually a JET. A 9x16 from their industrial lineup. It has been a great saw for me for almost a decade now and it was 15 years old when I bought it used. - Stainless

Unless you're someone who rewelds the deck on a 25 year old B&S powered lawnmower to milk another couple years out of it, you'll be sick of working on it soon enough. And don't even try the vertical 'table'. It's dangerous.
I worked on mine for ten years, made it do what was needed (cut 10' diameter tubing somewhere near square), then resold it after a Johnson came along. One of the better decisions I ever made.
Friends don't let friends buy Carolinas.
